Vice President / Senior Project Architect
In the somewhat unlikely event your company manufactured giant helium-filled parade balloons, you would be in good hands with John Oates as your architect, indeed. Your building would have enormous, high-ceilinged hallways to allow prototypes to be easily moved about from room to room. There wouldn’t be a sharp corner or pointy edge in the place. And your R & D lab would be outfitted with far more than average number of high-compression helium gas dispenser nozzles. It would be a building unlike any other. And that’s exactly the point. John believes passionately that every building he designs must be centered around each client’s unique needs. That form must follow function. And that great design starts with listening to what clients have to say in order to help them do whatever they do better. Perhaps that’s why clients in so many diverse industries have called on John’s skills—from healthcare facilities and universities to community centers and even Lambeau Field. They know that John will not only accept their input, but invite it– at every step of the design process. It’s an approach that has served John well over his more than 35 years at Somerville, and will serve your company well, too. Even if you’re not in the giant parade balloon business.
