Nick LaFaive
Electrical Designer

Nick LaFaive’s grandfather was his role model in more ways than one. He was Nick’s mentor, the sort of hero that a grandpa is to a grandson. But Nick also looked up to him for his hard work and skill in electrical engineering, his grandfather’s forte. The superintendent for Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company led the power plant work in Michigan for years, and his career sparked in his grandson an early interest in the industry.

When Nick helped his parents replace the outlets and lighting in their historic home, he found he not only enjoyed the work but it was something he was very good at.

Since Nick had math skills to spare, he explored engineering paths, continuing to find electrical work to be most interesting.

He’s finding his niche at Somerville, using the latest technology to convert the work of designers into a working model for construction. He appreciates Somerville’s team approach to the work and finds the strong communication among departments – something that can be hard to come by in project work – keeps multiple projects running smoothly at all times. It also creates a workplace culture that makes him enjoy his work even more.

Open to any project, Nick finds that being a bit newer to his role gives him the flexibility to jump into experiences with a fresh perspective and bring innovative approaches to the work. He is ready to learn from the more experienced team members, while calling upon his UW-Madison education and experience.

Nick grew up in Menasha and is happiest when he’s physically active or spending time with family. He’s recently picked up kayaking, loves bike rides and thrives on summer activities. But winter has its upside too. He’s played percussion since elementary school and is looking at joining a local band. And family time always rises to the top – board games, card games, outdoor fun and all.
