It was a long road to figuring out what she wanted to be when she grew up. But in a trip to Trek headquarters in Waterloo, Taylor Reed learned mechanical engineering is more than just automotive work.
Taylor, who loves to mountain bike, reached out to engineers at Trek for a visit that opened up to her the huge, diverse field of mechanical engineering.
The field melds her early interest in engineering – math, research and development classes, and other hands-on work — with her desire to create something elegant and deliver a product people can truly interact with. That convergence of goals led her squarely to mechanical engineering and the architectural world.
Her role with Somerville is an opportunity to ensure a space both functions properly and looks good doing it.
Taylor, who grew up in the Wausau area, is looking to be well-rounded in her field, and that’s an opportunity she has found at Somerville. She works with the mechanical designers in creating layouts of ductwork and pipework and continues to learn the plumbing and fire protection side of the work – gathering knowledge in all systems and how they work together. Eventually, Taylor aims to be a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in mechanical design.
It’s the importance of design that aligns with Somerville in particular. Though most people may notice the visual touches on a space, the mechanical design may not be immediately evident. But it’s the mechanical components that truly make it what it is.
Taylor was also drawn to Somerville because of the care the organization shows both employees and clients. Somerville encourages the life outside of work that Taylor finds so fulfilling, which includes mountain biking and racing with her husband and her family, the whole crew participating in races throughout the year. She competed in her first race at age 5, a 4-miler in which she came in dead last. But it’s been a series of successes since, with her latest goal a 12-hour solo ride.
And in setting her mind to it, no doubt it will be achieved.
