Emergency Department
Bellin Health
This hemmed-in urban hospital campus posed a perplexing challenge: How could the Emergency Services Department be expanded and modernized within a limited footprint? Our design team began by re-purposing the ground floor parking level of the main tower to add treatment space. In addition, the facility entrance was relocated to street level, allowing for a 6,300-square foot exterior expansion that today includes a main pod of 17 treatment rooms and central nursing station. The new entrance features a distinctive canopy with translucent glazing, offering easy, high-visibility access to patients both day and night. While the former department felt dark and cramped, the new design features a dazzling skylight and large exterior windows to invite daylight throughout the space. The airy, open feeling of the space is further enhanced with transom windows and 9-foot ceilings along the perimeter of patient treatment areas.
