Work hard, play hard. Ashton Markell takes the adage to heart, and it shows up in the mechanical drafting he creates and his always-on-the-go approach to life.
The Wisconsin native’s roots in engineering and design can be traced back to dinner table conversations as a family. Ever since he was old enough to hear talk of design, he was eager to learn more about it. Though he started in the field as a project manager, always on-site monitoring and working with the team, his interests led him to design school.
He was an outside observer – and admirer – of the clarity and precision of Somerville’s drawings, and that led him to the team here. Ashton works with the engineers and designers to design mechanical systems, using all the digital tools that produce the best results. In his current role, Ashton assists in the work alongside the engineers and designers, and he considers his gift to be his ability to help out wherever needed. He hopes that “work hard” mentality makes him a go-to guy for getting things done and keeping the team moving forward.
To Ashton, good design is not just user-friendly and lasting, but something that sparks awe in people. The type of awe he feels himself when he steps into Somerville-designed work at Lambeau Field, this sports-lover’s utopia. Ashton’s goal is to leave his own mark in the community on projects that spark that sense of awe with others.
In his off hours? That’s when the “play hard” mentality kicks in. It’s all about keeping busy – indoors and outdoors – from volleyball and basketball to wake surfing and skiing – winter, spring, summer and fall.
He’s a man of action, giving it his all in work and play.
