MSTC Innovative Classroom

MID-STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGE

The MSTC Innovative Classroom project’s goal was to transform the traditional classroom into a flexible, multi-purpose, high-tech, empowering learning environment. One where small group interactive learning was supported by personal electronics, like smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Three classrooms, on two different campuses, were selected for the remodel. A visioning session with key administrators, faculty, architects, IT/AV staff, and furniture designers, was conducted to define how the rooms should function, and what technology was important to engage students in a more interactive learning environment. The rooms feature flexible movable furniture which allows the “front” of the room to move as needed. Multiple large-screen monitors throughout the space allow for individual and small group display, or all screens displaying the same source. Interactive projection screens allow for viewing multiple image sources, interactive real-time markups, and archiving as digital files for later reference. Large write-on wall surfaces were used to go far beyond the limitations of the traditional marker board.
