MSTC Student Services
MID-STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGE
The Wisconsin Rapids campus needed a “front door” and that’s exactly what the new Student Services & Information Center is. With admissions, academic advising, counseling, disability services, financial aid, registration, testing and other departments relocated to the forefront of campus, the student-focused customer service model was streamlined. Achieved through a new 5,400 square-foot addition and 4,200 square-feet of renovations, the functional and modern space is a one-stop destination for students. Architecturally, the striking new 2-story atrium entrance draws attention, yet compliments the existing 1970’s building for a cohesive look.
Balance was found by introducing stone as a new material, where it’s rose accent color is harmonious with the existing iron spot brick. The added expanse of glass invites the outdoors in, where natural light washes the tongue and groove wood ceiling and exposed glulam beams. Direct sunlight is controlled by exterior canopies, with a permanent shading film applied to the wall’s high windows, and users have individual control with blinds at ground level. For that reason, the environment is warm and inviting at all times of day. This project was more than just the physical repositioning of student services departments on campus. The Center is part of a comprehensive plan to improve the way the College connects students to the resources they need, resulting in a smooth transition from application to graduation – and ultimately increasing student success.
